I'll say that the art direction itself was miles better than NWN. You can see it in reviews of the time, where some aspects get praised while others weren't. That said, KOTOR also wasn't a leader in graphics for its time. So it would be perhaps unfair of me to claim that Bioware as a whole didn't have talented 3D artists working for them based on just the one game when another came out the very next year with different people working on it. Directors, programmers, artists all have completely different people credited to them.
A clarification is probably warranted that despite being developed by the same studio, KOTOR and NWN weren't developed by the same teams. Minor mistake since the comparisons all hold, but worth noting since KOTOR did come out in 2003. I listed 2003 as the year of comparison, but NWN came out in 2002, as did all the games I compared it to.
